Idle (ἀργός argos)

Yet truly, about the eleventh hour, he went out and found others standing, and he said to them, Why have you stood here idle all day? (Mt 20:6)

περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί;

circa undecimam vero exiit et invenit alios stantes et dicit illis quid hic statis tota die otiosi?

It is not, as some believe, that last-hour workers are symbolic of people converted “on their deathbed”, at the last moment. They sit idly because no one hired them, they wanted to work, and they had no one to work for. It is good that in their waiting for the Employer they were like wise virgins.
