On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too. (Mt 22:40)
ἐν ταύταις ταῖς δυσὶν ἐντολαῖς ὅλος ὁ νόμος κρέμαται καὶ οἱ προφῆται.
In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetæ.
The name “cardinal virtues” comes from the Latin word cardus (hinge). These virtues organize interpersonal relations. Similarly, the commandments of love give sense, meaning, to all law. The mission of the prophets, those who hear and preach the Word of God, would be meaningless without love, that is the foundation, the source.
