A shoot will spring from the stock of Jesse, a new shoot will grow from his roots. On him will rest the spirit of Yahweh, the spirit of wisdom and insight, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and fear of Yahweh. (Is 11:1-2)
A shoot will sprout from a stump that is apparently dry and cut from branches… This shoot heralds new life and brings hope for rebirth… The noun חֹטֶר (hoter) in Hebrew is masculine, just like נֵצֶר (nezer – twig), which is why we read further that The Spirit will rest on HIM. This is the announcement of the Messiah, which came true in the person of Jesus Christ. He is the One who brings new life, who has the fullness of the Spirit. He – the awaited Messiah – can revive everything in us that seemingly is withered and lifeless.
