To believe (πιστεύω pisteuō)

Believe in the Lord Jesus — they answered — and you will be saved, you and your household.” (Acts 16:31)

οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· πίστευσον ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ σωθήσῃ σὺ καὶ ὁ οἶκός σου.

At illi dixerunt: “Crede in Domino Iesu et salvus eris tu et domus tua”.

Today’s Word invites me to a faith that saves — not only me, but also my loved ones. The Greek verb πιστεύω (pisteuō) combined with the preposition ἐπὶ (epi) indicates that this faith must be directed toward Jesus, built upon Him. He is the guarantee of my salvation and deliverance.

The Greek word πιστεύω (pisteuō) means to believe / to trust / to place confidence. In a biblical context, it refers to faith in God leading to trust and obedience to His word and a change in our choices. The Hebrew equivalent of this word is אמן ‘[âman].
