The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah. He passed through the regions of Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced against the Ammonites.. (Jdg 11:29)

The Hebrew word יִפְתָּח (yiphtāḥ) means “he will open” or “he whom God makes free.” It comes from the verb פָּתַח (pāṯaḥ) — to open wide / to loosen / to unblock. The Greek equivalent of this name is Ἰεφθάε (Jephthae).
